Dressing For Summer

Well, summer has arrived.  Memorial Day marks the opening of the season.

How do you dress for summer?  Do you enjoy the season's clothing?

I'm not really sure what women wear this time of year, other than to pick lightweight, casual items, usually worn with sandals.  Heat precludes more elaborate outfits and the relaxed mood of summer seems to dissipate concern for formal fashion.  Relaxation often shows in the clothes people wear.

What do you like to wear?

  1. Sundresses! I love girly florals, ruffles, soft fabrics, silks and lace, cotton and linen, flounces and movement.

I also love sandals and having my toenails done in a pretty colour (or something fun like aqua or yellow).

For accessories, I prefer one or maybe two statement pieces instead of layers of necklaces or multiple bracelets; maybe a giant pair of hoops or one bold cuff.

I think you would love sundresses - and they are easier to fit than more formal dresses because they're looser. I bet you could find some pretty ones in the thrift/consignment shops.

Thank you for your very sweet comment on my blog. Please don't ever feel you have to rein in what you want to say, okay? I love your comments, and I love that you feel secure and safe enough in my little corner of the blogosphere to express yourself. You are always welcome, and I'm honoured and flattered whenever you visit.

  2. I love long skirts and dresses for summer(ok and winter). They are so comfortable. And I don't wear necklaces in summer most of the time because I get sweaty under them. Which is sad because I like wearing necklaces.

  5. T-shirt + skirt or shorts, and of course dresses. I'm also rediscovering sandals this summer after having been a flip-flops & ballerinas girl for the past few years.

  6. I think this summer is all about florals but for me sandals, and summer dresses are the top picks. I love to be able to just throw something on that's light weight and no fuss!

Lots of floaty dresses and tops
I am a sandal lover but try and go barefoot as much as possible

  8. I try to wear as few clothes as possible without looking like a slut.
    Seriously.
This morning, it was 80 degrees when I woke up. It's 8:27 a.m. right now, and it is almost 90.
    I'm dying.
It is all about spaghetti strap tops and shorts.

  9. Bermuda shorts, I know they kinda have a "soccer Mom" reputation, but I love um. I'm also a fan of the easy cotton skirt and tee as well. Flip-flops or sandals are a must for cool tootsies. I also tend to dobig earrings rather then a necklace to keep my neck cool.

  10. I find summer clothes difficult! I'm either too hot outside, but then too cold in the office with the AC! I usually wear a summer dress and bring a cardigan.

Yes, definitely we'll schedule a blogger meet-up! What works best for your usually?

  11. A little more color. A little more neutral. Does that make sense? I know right. I like denim, but I'll probably try to lay off it as summer progresses. It's more of a spring thing for me. And finally I can wear all my fun shoes again! Clearly, I need to think on this topic a little bit more...that's what happens when you only get 2 months of summer...

  13. Well, considering the summers here in Georgia are sweltering (it's been over 90 quite a bit already, and it's not even summer yet, UGH), thin fabrics and not much clothing are the order of the day. I'd say cotton dresses for maximum airflow and spaghetti strap tops with shorts and flip-flops!

Where did that pic come from? That shirt is super pretty!

  14. I love all seasons as they bring different opportunities for outfit combinations. Summer in southern CA contrary to popular belief is never 'hot'. We might occasionally get a heat wave here and there that would last 4-5 days tops but that is other. Otherwise it is just 'warm' and always 'cool' in the early morning and late evening. So my summer attire here always consists of a thin layer on top for that morning chill.
In Turkey though it is scroching hot and there I like to stick with mini or maxi summer tank dresses with flip flops or sandals and minimal accessories.

  15. I love silk dresses with bare legs and and sandals in the summer, but sadly in SF it's rarely warm enough to be that uncovered. On the other hand, I don't have to be as vigilant about shaving my legs as people do in warmer climates. ;-)

  16. I agree with a lot of people here. I definitely love wearing florals in summer. Also more pastels, and more feminine clothes. I love full skirts and the '50s silhouette this time of the year.

  17. oh boy. If I could, I would live in shorts and tank tops, or short skirts and tank tops with really comfy sandals so I could walk on the beach, or just hang out. I love sleeveless stuff.. not always appropriate in the office though.. and I love skirts....

  18. wahhh i hate summer =( There's nothing I hate more than being overheated and sweaty. I hate the sun so much. I love being able to make an outfit fun with layers of tights, cardigans, coats, etc. In the summer, you kind of have to stick to one, simple thing. I always wear dresses and tights... usually with espadrilles or oxfords with socks. I do love pastel colors which are good for summer. And I try to accessorize extra with rings and such to make up for the lost layers!

  19. I'm with Sheila- sundresses, anything light and airy, sandals (with a heel of course!)

  20. Hello Ally, I do like summer, but it's not as fun as fall or spring wear for me- because in hot Sacramento sun there is NO layering. it is a lightweight cotton dress or shorts and top, and shoes. Pretty basic.

Colorwise, black, red, some white thrown in. Lots of vintage prints and vintage dresses.

  24. I can't wait to see Midnight in Paris! I feel like I want to see it alone though and my friends are so nosy about coming with me. Need to be sneaky, or see it in the city after work.

In the summer is when people sort of give up on fashion. Especially around July and August. Anyone who looks dressed up in NYC is probably uncomfortable and people roll their eyes as they walk by. I just go for light dresses, sandals, and a MASSIVE sweater that lives in my office to pull on when the A/C is blasting.

  26. Dresses, dresses, dresses! It's interesting that some people think that summer is somehow less fashionable because you can't layer. For me, summer is the ultimate season for fashion, because it's the intersection of beautiful and natural. Your skin glows by itself, you're more inclined to run around and my figure always improves. So what if you don't want to wear sweaty necklaces? Where a beautiful cotton dress and accessorize with a handful of strawberries! Summer is the best. Flat shoes are basically the only reasonable footwear.

    It's raining in Barcelona. I'm so bad-tempered! ; )
